Germany: "We can't drive 55!"

The EU Observer is reporting the stirrings of a move to lower the EU speed limit to 90 km/hr or 55.9 mph. Not surprisingly, this will likely ruffle a few feathers in Germany:

Last year, a broad majority of German politicians and parties were, however, prepared to introduce speed restrictions, but the government in the end stepped back from taking the controversial move.

Setting the speed limit to 90 km per hour would raise too many strong emotions in Germany, according to the Social Democrat chairman of the German parliament's environment committee, Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker.

Speaking as someone who has spent several months in Germany (a good portion of which was spent at speeds significantly above 90 km/hr), I would say that it would be a major blow to the identity of Germany. The Autobahn is as much a part of what Germany is as the Eiffel Tower and sniveling is a part of France.
